The name of the peridot gemstone is believed to come from either the French word 'peritot' meaning 'unclear' or the Arabic word 'faridat' meaning 'gem'.
Peridots are one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color and are formed from forsterite olivine. Peridot is often referred to as the "poor man's emerald". The depth of green depends on the iron which is contained within the crystal structure, and varies from yellow-green to olive to brownish green.
Gem quality peridot is rare but due to its delicate coloring it makes very pretty jewelry. Peridot gemstones are found in Brazil, Upper Burma, MinasGerais and Egypt and crystals have been found in iron-nickel meteorites.
