Facts about Beryl

The name beryl comes from the Greek word beryllos, commonly applied to aquamarine. Beryl covers a variety of stones including emeralds, aquamarine, heliodor, morganite and goshenite.

Occasionally beryl is found lacking the substances which give it the colors associated with gemstones such as emeralds and aquamarine. This is known as goshenite after the place where it was originally found, Goshen in Massachusetts. Colorless beryl is rare and in the past was used to make glasses for people to wear.

The Mohs scale of hardness of these gems is between 7.8 and 8.
