Facts about aquamarine

Aquamarine (in Latin means 'water of the sea') is a transparent variety of beryl with a delicate blue or blue-green color. It is closely related to the emerald gemstone.

Aquamarine occurs at most localities which yield ordinary beryl. Some of the finest coming from Russia. Clear yellow beryl which is found in Brazil is sometimes called aquamarine chrysolite. When corundum is present it is often termed Oriental aquamarine. This gives it the typical bluish tint of aquamarine.

In the United States aquamarines can be found at the summit of Mt. Antero in the Sawatch Range in central Colorado.

The largest stone ever mined was at Marambaia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1910. It weighed over 110 kg, and its dimensions were 48.5 cm long and 42 cm in diameter. Others have been found in Madagascar and also California.

Aquamarine is the official state gem of Colorado.
