Facts about Bronze

Bronze refers to a broad range of copper alloys, usually with tin as the main additive. Typically the mix is 60% copper and 40% tin but other elements may be used. It is strong and tough, and has many uses in industry.

While copper and tin can occur naturally, the two ores are rarely found together.

It was particularly significant in antiquity, giving its name to the Bronze Age. Being harder and more durable than stone and copper it was used for tools, weapons, armor and various building materials like decorative tiles. The earliest tin-alloy bronzes date to the late 4000BC and are found in Iran and Iraq.

Bronze is the most popular metal for top-quality cymbals and bells and more recently, saxophones. It is also widely used for casting metal bronze sculptures.

Common bronze alloys often have the unusual and very desirable property of expanding slightly just before they set, thus filling in the finest details of a mold. This gives remarkable detail to the bronzes.

Commercial bronze is 90% copper and 10% zinc and is known as 'brass'.
