Facts about pearls

Pearls are rounded, hard objects formed inside the shell of bivalve molluscs such as oysters in response to an irritating object such as a grain of sand, small fish or even a crab. This irritation makes the oysters deposit layers of calcium carbonate in the the form of calcite or minerals-aragonite. These are then held together with a compound called conchiolin, to produce the small pearl gemstones. The iridescence that some pearls display is caused by the overlapping of successive layers, which then breaks up the light falling on the surface of the pearl.

The majority of pearls found are usually white, sometimes with a creamy or pinkish tinge. Pearls may also be discovered tinted with yellow, green, blue, brown, purple, or black. Black pearls, often referred to as Black Tahitian Pearls are highly valued because of their rarity.

Pearls are mostly used in jewelry, but are often crushed and used in cosmetics or paint.
