Facts about Sterling Silver
Sterling Silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper). It is also known as 925 silver as there are 925 parts in every thousand of silver. The other metal is added to improve the strength because pure or Fine Silver is generally too soft for practical use. The addition still leaves a high precious metal content.
There are various theories as to the origin of the name Sterling Silver.
One is that the sterling comes from small stars that were visible on early Norman pennies (Old English: steorling.) Another explanation is that Sterling Silver may have been known first as "Easterling Silver". This is believed to have been used to refer to the grade of silver that had originally been used as the local currency in an area of Germany known as "The Easterling".
